Hammond Dam in the flood of 2005. The south wing wall is in tact. In 2008, during another flood, the wall was moved, exposing a deadly chemical to fish and wildlife.

It was the closest I could get. I had already tried the other bridge in the photo. Both were about the same distance from the accident, although from each bridge, it looked like the other was closer.

My first time photographing swine at the county fair. The winners (and a few other people) couldn't get this pig to stay still for the photo. They tried everything, but the pig wasn't having any of it. The girl's smile is part frustration. That day, I shot over 30 trophy winners in swine, dairy, beef and rabbits.

The Missouri Valley, Iowa Editor and I had a good time with this one. I started it by commenting on a contest during one of Missouri Valley's celebrations - Spaghetti Sucking. Is that a family fun event, I asked. Then I found out Beaver Crossing was holding a Watermelon Seed-Spitting Contest. Needless to say, the daily e-mails between the editor and I lasted a solid month over spaghetti sucking and seed-spitting.

I was going to get a photo of the 2005 flood damage wherever I could. I liked this photo, but I couldn't publish it large enough to show it off in the newspaper.

The team's only home meet for the season. A small weekly newspaper remains true to its pledge of hometown news by covering sports in depth. Rural communiites in Nebraska are frequently identified by high school sports.

She became one of the most improved runners of the season in her first year on the Cross Country team.
